A centrally-managed digital signage network across retail stores: remote content scheduling, promotions synchronized chain-wide, and screens that never show a blank panel.
An established supermarket chain ran in-store promotions on printed posters and USB-stick slideshows. Updates were slow, messaging was inconsistent between branches, and keeping up with changing offers was impossible. The challenge
Retail promotion cycles move faster than print. A price change agreed on Monday reaches posters days later, by which time the offer may have changed. Each branch improvises with a USB stick, and messaging diverges store by store with no visibility at head office. The failure that matters most is not a wrong price but a black screen: a dark panel in a customer aisle broadcasts neglect. Retail connectivity is unreliable, so any system needing a live connection will go blank at the worst moment.
Our approach
Players must be autonomous. Each screen caches its scheduled content and plays from that cache; the network fetches updates and reports status rather than streaming what is on screen. If connectivity drops for days, the screen keeps playing the last valid schedule. That decision alone determines whether a signage network is reliable in practice. Second, scheduling had to match how retail merchandises: some promotions are chain-wide, some regional, some store-specific, some restricted to a daypart or zone — entrance, fresh, checkout. So store, zone and daypart are first-class dimensions, and chain-wide campaigns apply everywhere a more specific rule does not override.

How we sequenced the work
We started with the player and offline cache, because that is the hard part and everything else is worthless if it does not hold. A player that plays reliably from cache, recovers from power cuts and reports state was the first milestone, tested against deliberately broken networks. Then the content pipeline, transcoding, scheduling and console. Then a pilot in a few stores, including one with poor connectivity — piloting only in the flagship proves nothing.

No, by design. Players boot into playback automatically and recover from power loss without intervention, and there is no local interface to operate.
